What you’ll need

How to clean with Bicarbonate of Soda

Method 1: Sprinkle

  1. Sprinkle some Bicarbonate of Soda onto a damp sponge with a non-scratch scrubbing surface or a dump Microfibre Cloth.
  2. Use the sponge or cloth to clean work surfaces, tubs, sinks, microwave, cooker hood, fridge and toilets and remove tough residue.
  3. Rinse well afterwards and dry with a clean Microfibre Cloth.

Method 2: Make a paste

  1. Prepare a gently abrasive paste by mixing 3 parts of Bicarbonate of Soda with one part of water.
  2. Spread the paste over gritty surfaces.
  3. Let sit for several minutes to work, then scrub with a cloth.
  4. Rinse well afterwards and dry with a clean Microfibre Cloth.

Method 3: Prepare a cleaning solution

  1. Combine 1 tbsp of Bicarbonate of Soda, 1 tbsp of Castile Soap with 250 ml of distilled or previously boiled and slightly cooled water in a container until fully dissolved. Make sure the Bicarbonate of Soda is fully resolved as the powder can clog your spray bottle’s nozzle.
  2. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle using a funnel, then optionally add 5-10 drops of your favourite Essential Oil (remember, if you‘re using it, always add it last). Be sure to label your cleaning solution with a waterproof label if stored. Alternatively, simply soak the cloth directly in the mixture without the need for a spray bottle.
  3. Shake well and spray onto the surface and allow it to work for five to ten minutes.
  4. Wipe clean and dry with a Microfibre Cloth for a streak-free result.

Use for: Multiple Surfaces around the house

Bicarbonate of Soda is an excellent multipurpose cleaner that‘s effective without being too abrasive. It‘s perfect for tackling greasy, dirty, or oily surfaces, especially in the kitchen. You can use it to wipe down countertops, sinks, microwaves, cooker hoods, fridges, toilets and even your utensils.

No Glass Icon

Glass:
Despite being a mild abrasive cleaner, Bicarbonate of Soda has the potential to scratch glass and mirrors, so it‘s best to avoid using it on these surfaces.

Icon No steel

Aluminium:
When using Bicarbonate of Soda to clean aluminium surfaces like pans, it can cause oxidisation over time, which turns the surface brown. If you must use Bicarbonate of Soda on aluminium pots and pans, make sure to rinse them immediately after.

Icon no natural stone

Natural Stone:
Avoid using Bicarbonate of Soda on natural stone surfaces like quartz, marble, and granite. Repeated use can damage the sealant and leave scratches on the stone.

Icon no sealed wood

Sealed Wood::
Bicarbonate of Soda can damage or wear away the finish or sealant on wood furniture, leaving a dull appearance, so it‘s best to avoid using it on wooden surfaces.

Icon no silver

Antique Silver:
While Bicarbonate of Soda can quickly remove tarnish from silverware, it‘s too abrasive and can cause it to lose its patina and tarnish more quickly over time.

Icon no gold

Gold-Plated Items::
Gold is a soft metal, so using Bicarbonate of Soda to clean gold-plated utensils or dishes can scratch and ruin the finish. Prolonged use can cause the plating to wear off, so it‘s best to avoid using Bicarbonate of Soda on these items.

Once prepared, this spray will last for approximately 4-8 weeks. For optimal shelf life, store it properly labeled in amber or dark bottles to protect it from light. If it starts to look or smell off before the 8-week mark, discard it and make a fresh batch.

Store Bicarbonate of Soda sealed tightly, in a cool, dry place, out of reach of children and pets.

While Bicarbonate of Soda is generally considered a very safe cleaning agent, it is always a good idea to wear rubber gloves if you have highly sensitive skin to prevent dryness. Alternatively, rinse your hands thoroughly after use and avoid contact with your eyes as it can cause redness.
