How to Remove Stains from a Fabric Sofa with Oxygen Bleach
How to remove stains from a fabric sofa without harsh chemicals: a mild Oxygen Bleach solution, mixed fresh, lifts tea, coffee, wine and food marks from sofas and chairs.
Takes 30 minutes, plus drying
What you’ll need
- ½ tbsp Oxygen Bleach
- 250 ml warm water
- Two clean, light-coloured cloths or a Premium Microfibre Cloth
- A small bowl
Method
- Check the care label on your sofa. Only use this on fabric marked W or W/S.
- Dissolve ½ tbsp Oxygen Bleach in 250 ml warm water. Use it straight away.
- Test on a hidden spot first and let it dry to check the colour doesn’t change.
- Blot the stain with the solution on a cloth, working from the outside in. Don’t rub.
- Leave for 10–15 minutes, then blot with a clean cloth dampened in plain water to rinse.
- Press with a dry cloth to soak up as much moisture as you can, and leave to air-dry.
Tea, coffee, red wine, juice, food and sweat marks on water-safe fabric sofas, armchairs, dining chairs and car seats.
Oxygen Bleach releases active oxygen when it meets warm water. The oxygen breaks down the coloured parts of a stain, so the mark fades without chlorine bleach.
Blotting instead of rubbing lifts the stain into the cloth instead of pushing it deeper into the fibres.
The science: Sodium percarbonate (PubChem, NIH) →
Wool, silk and leather: Oxygen Bleach can damage protein fibres and leather. Use a little Castile Soap in water on wool, and leather cleaner on leather.
Velvet and dry-clean-only fabric: Fabric marked S or X needs a professional or a dry-cleaning solvent, not water.
Too much water: Soaking the cushion lets water reach the filling, which can leave a ring or a musty smell.
Mix fresh every time: once dissolved, Oxygen Bleach stops working after a few hours.
Never store the solution in a closed bottle. It releases oxygen and can build up pressure.
Keep the powder sealed in a cool, dry place.
Oxygen Bleach can irritate skin and eyes. Wear gloves and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

B&M Pro-Tip 1:
Act fast, blot don’t rub. Fresh stains come out far more easily than old ones.

B&M Pro-Tip 2:
Not sure what the stain is? Start with cold water: hot water sets protein stains like blood, egg and milk.
Quick questions
What do the codes on my sofa label mean?
W: water-based cleaners are fine. S: solvent only. W/S: either. X: vacuum only. Use this recipe on W or W/S.
Will it fade my sofa?
Oxygen Bleach is colour-safe on most fabrics, but always test a hidden spot first.
Why is there a ring after it dried?
Usually too much water. Blot again with a barely damp cloth from the outside in, and dry it quickly with a fan.
