Also known as Baking Soda, is a traditional, safe and non-toxic multipurpose cleaner. It can be used to keep a variety of surfaces in your home sparkling clean and fresh. Bicarbonate of Soda is a base, meaning it reacts with oils and fats, allowing it to dissolve dirt, grease, and oil. Additionally, its deodorizing power is the result of an acid-base reaction. Bicarbonate of Soda interacts with the acidic molecules causing odours and neutralizes them. As a salt, it has mild abrasive properties, which provide a scrubbing action without leaving any scratches.

All Purpose Cleaner:

Use Bicarbonate of Soda as an All Purpose Cleaner without being too abrasive. Sprinkle it on a damp sponge with a non-scratch scrubbing surface. Use the sponge to clean tubs, sinks, and toilets and remove tough residue.

Kitchen degreaser:

For cleaning greasy, dirty, or oily surfaces in your kitchen, take a wet Microfiber Cloth and sprinkle Bicarbonate of Soda on it. You can use this to wipe down your work surface, sink, microwave, cooker hood, fridge, and even your utensils.

Deodorize Fridges and freezers:

Clean your fridges and freezers with Bicarbonate of Soda. Turn off the appliance and remove the shelves. Wash the inside surfaces with two tablespoons of Bicarbonate of Soda and 250 ml of warm water. Then, rinse with clean water and wipe dry.

Clean Pots and Pans:

To remove baked or stuck-on food from pots and pans, boil water and add a few tablespoons of Bicarbonate of Soda until the food begins to break up. Allow it to cool a little, then wipe it clean.

Clean Wax-free Flooring:

Use Bicarbonate of Soda to create a powerful cleaner for tiles and other types of wax-free flooring. Mix 100 grams of Bicarbonate of Soda in a bucket of warm water, mop the floors and rinse them.

Deodorize shoes, carpets, rugs:

If you want to get rid of the unpleasant odour in your shoes, carpets, or rugs, just sprinkle some Bicarbonate of Soda inside your shoes or on your carpet or rug. Allow it to sit for an hour, preferably overnight, then vacuum up the powder. To help deodorize smelly refrigerators, wardrobes or drawers, simply add some Bicarbonate of Soda to a bowl. Place the bowl in the offending area to neutralize unpleasant odours. For optimal results, stir it weekly and replace the baking soda every 3 months.

Laundry Booster:

Add 100 grams of Bicarbonate of Soda to your washer to boost the cleaning and deodorizing potency of your detergent by balancing pH levels and softening wash water. For optimal results, add the Bicarbonate of Soda during the rinse cycle.

Although Bicarbonate of Soda can be used to clean many items and surfaces around your home, there are a few places where you should use alternative products:

Glass:

Despite being a mild abrasive cleaner, Bicarbonate of Soda has the potential to scratch glass and mirrors. So it‘s best to avoid using it on these surfaces.

Aluminium:

When using Bicarbonate of Soda to clean aluminium surfaces like pans, it can cause oxidisation over time, which turns the surface brown. If you must use Bicarbonate of Soda on aluminium pots and pans, make sure to rinse them immediately after.

Natural Stone:

Avoid using Bicarbonate of Soda on natural stone surfaces like quartz, marble, and granite. Repeated use can damage the sealant and leave scratches on the stone.

Sealed Wood:

Bicarbonate of Soda can damage or wear away the finish or sealant on wood furniture, leaving a dull appearance, so it‘s best to avoid using it on wooden surfaces.

Antique Silver:

While Bicarbonate of Soda can quickly remove tarnish from silverware, it‘s too abrasive and can cause it to lose its patina and tarnish more quickly over time.

Gold-Plated Items:

Gold is a soft metal, so using Bicarbonate of Soda to clean gold-plated utensils or dishes can scratch and ruin the finish. Prolonged use can cause the plating to wear off, so it‘s best to avoid using Bicarbonate of Soda on these items.

Since one of the best uses for Bicarbonate of Soda is absorbing odour, you shouldn’t leave it open in your pantry. Store Bicarbonate of Soda in a labelled airtight container to protect it from humidity and prevent moisture from ruining your stash. Get a container with a tight seal, such as our glass jars. Not only will this keep the Bicarbonate of Soda fresh and maximize its shelf life, but it also makes it easier to scoop out when needed for cleaning.

While Bicarbonate of Soda is generally considered a very safe cleaning agent, it is always a good idea to wear rubber gloves if you have highly sensitive skin to prevent dryness. Alternatively, rinse your hands thoroughly after use and avoid contact with your eyes as it can cause redness.
